Reddiyarchatram to get multi-cr. project with Israeli expertise.

Main aim of the project was to impart training to farmers to adopt proven Israeli-agro technologies to boost vegetable production.

Reddiyarchatram block in the district will soon become a place of technical excellence as it will have its Centre of Excellence for Vegetables, an Indo-Israel project at an estimated cost of Rs.10.18 crore in order to augment vegetable production in the State.

In the first phase of implementing the mega project here on Friday, Uri Rubinstein, Israel Project Counsellor, International Agriculture and Cooperation from Embassy of Israel, New Delhi, along with his team, kick started the work by planting hybrid variety of chillies (US- 344) in a Demonstration Unit being set up as per Israeli technology during his visit this evening.

“It’s a great opportunity and honour to be here with the people from National Horticulture Mission (NHM). We will provide more technologies to boost production”, he said after launching the project.

The special team has also introduced many advanced technologies like raising beds, paired row planting, pro-tray seedlings, drip and fertigation and white-poly mulching in the demonstration unit.

Briefing the project, Deputy Director of Horticulture G. Kandasamy said that the demonstration unit will be developed in 5.8 hectares of land on Palani Road in Reddiyarchatram.

The new unit will have an advanced poly green house for fan and pad method with automation, shade net house, demonstration units for vegetables and hi-tech micro irrigation with fertigation. An insect proof net house will also come up shortly. Farmers in the district could visit the unit any time and get hands on experience, he added.

The Indo-Israel project was formally launched by Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on October 15, 2012.
